How to Use the WordPress Menus

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about how to set up and use WordPress navigation menus, so I created this screencast that explains it.

Hey, it really is a great thing having the different Portfolio sections! Thanks for the video! So there is only one thing I am still wondering about, which probably is really easy and I am just to dumb figuring it out: How can I change the black header to a picture that appears up there??
    Thanks

  2. Devin! You’re awesome! This makes total sense and I was able to set it up on my blog! Thanks for taking the time to make such an easy-to-follow video – it really helped! Cheryl

  3. I sent you a comment about this topic earlier. I’ve now watched this tutorial. I’ve used Portfolio Tags but the the portfolio items are still not separating to the separate pages or portfolio sections.

I was thinking of deleting all the content and starting over to see if maybe they will somehow magically separate in to different categories.

I will try to watch this tutorial again, and again. LOL.

Please advise if you have any suggestions.

    Thank you,

    Miss XX

  4. Devin,
Thank you for your timely response! I really appreciate it since I am in a time crunch and trying to get this up asap. I kind of understand what you are saying and I will try it.

Do you happen to have any written step by step instructions or videos on exactly how to do this?
Or is it in that “how to use menus” video and I just need to watch it again.

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

    Hi!

I have been trying to add pictures to the portfolio via “add a new element” but the nothing actually shows. Comments, description and everything that is text show but the picture. Link broken or something…could you help me?

  6. Hi again Devin – I just updated my theme version (don’t know if that is the reason for this problem) but there’s something wrong now – you’d have to see the home page – but when I go to “menus” I get the message “Catchable fatal error. Object of class WP_Error could not be converted to string in /home6/compuuc.3/public_html/kristineames/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 445.” Any ideas on what to do?

    Hello,

I would like to ask if there is any possibility to change the portfolio layout when I am using portfolio sections (because the option Portfolio or Full-width portfolio is available only on pages).

    Thank you!

      1. Hi Devin,

I have the same question as Jeddy. Love the theme but don’t want the sidebar for the portfolio sections. Do you know the code for the portfolio tags template. Would that be the taxonomy-portfolio-tags.php page? That is the only one that I see in the editor that could be it.

AMAZING! This theme is a godsend, and I couldn’t have asked for a more appropriate video tutorial than this one. I had so many questions (like should I be focusing on classifying all of my portfolio items into categories, or tags???), and this just completely set me straight! You’re a good guy, Devin!

Hi, I’m currently using Portfolio Press for my art site and I was wondering is there a way to use just the pages to post portfolio items instead of using portfolio tags on the WordPress menu as shown on the video? (Also can I use just categories instead of tags for the WordPress menu?)

  10. I’m struggling with the menus. The sidebar isn’t showing on portfolio pages. I have the page template designated as ‘Portfolio”, not ‘Full-width Portfolio”

From your video it looks like they should show in both places? Can you help me figure this out? I found your video about the menus and tags super-helpful

  11. Thanks for this great theme. I am trying to set it up for my portfolio website, but have a few questions.
First of all, if I change the template in a page, nothing happens. I want the portfolio page to be a full width page, and changing the template should do the trick, but it doesn’t.
Second question: why can I only place 9 pictures in the portfolio page? I don’t think there should be a limitation, or am I wrong?
    Any help is greatly appreciated

Helen, I can answer your question about the 9 posts. This is an easy fix that Devin explains on the main page for this theme: “Change: $query->set( ‘posts_per_page’, ’9′ ) in functions.php, and: ‘posts_per_page’ => 9, in content-portfolio.php.” Just make sure you change it to multiples of 3. I changed mine to 30. As for your other question, changing the template to “full length portfolio” works for me. Do you have more than 3 portfolio items created? If less than 3 maybe that’s why it doesn’t look like its using the full length. In my case I have a different issue: if I change a page template back to “portfolio” it still shows full-width. I would have thought that the “portfolio” template option would give you a sidebar so I’m not sure I understand what the difference is between the “Full width portfolio” and “Portfolio” page templates. They seem to be doing the same thing for me.

  13. Hey love the theme, still learning Word Press, I saw this question but it was never answered, is it possible to add a image for the headed Background as opposed to the black default?

also I installed Color Box and was hoping it would work in Portfolio, any tips or ideas I overlooked?

    Thanks for a great theme!

You just save my life with this video. I’m new with WP and I NEVER saw the screen option to get the tags list !! I have been looking for tags navigation menu for over 2 hours ! (I”m maybe not good with Google or English too^^)

    Thanks,
    Noemie

  15. Just wanted to thank you for creating the Portfolio Press theme, and for being so diligent in posting directions, clear video walk throughs, and answering millions of questions. This is not my first attempt at building an artist website for myself, but it is the first time I feel like I am actually succeeding. I still have a long way to go, but these beginnings are seriously a huge relief.

  16. Hi, thank you for your job and awesome Theme with I`m using atm. and i really enjoy it simplicity and RWD design.
I want to ask You about adding 2nd menu (full width) on the top or beneath Primary Navigation, is there a simple way( function) for that ?

    Thank You

  17. Ok want to start out by saying thanks for all your hard work and effort on this theme. It’s really amazing and has helped me a lot.

I’m a bit of a newbie so apologize….I am confused how to subcategorize posts. Right now every post goes up as a thumbnail link on my homepage. I want to have subcategory pages….one for particular topics. Can’t seem to wrap my head around how to dictate how certain posts would only show up on certain pages.

thanks again for all your hard work Devin.

    Thanks,

I have a question about the Portfolio Press theme. In mobile, after I select a menu option to go to a different page, the “hamburger” menu icon then jumps down to below the site title. How can I get it to stay in the correct position, to the right of the site title?
