Portfolio Press & Portfolio+ Updates

There are a number of changes in this latest version of Portfolio Press and Portfolio+. I’m hoping the update will be seamless for most users, but there will be a few steps to complete once you upgrade.

portfolio-press-2-0

Page templates have been updated in this version, so if you have any page templates set (say for the portfolio on the home page), you may need to go to that page, re-select the template, and re-save. I wrote an update routine to do this but it won’t fire in all situations. So, just to be safe, give it a check and make the updates if needed.

Next, the theme should prompt you to change your posts per page settings in the reading options. I recommend 9. Previously, the theme had automatically controlled this, but people have often wanted to change the default (to 12 or 15). This now you gives you that control. It also fixes edge case paging bugs that some users experienced.

Finally, you’ll want to install the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin and generate new images. The theme should also prompt for this. There were a couple of image size changes in this update (especially if you had the one column layout selected)- and this will ensure that your images are at the proper size and should fix images that may have appeared blurry previously.

After you install the Regenerate Thumbnails Plugin. Go to your “Tools” > “Regen. Thumbnails” and click “Regenerate All Thumbnails”. After you’ve done this, you can delete the plugin.

Bugs After Upgrading?

If you’re looking at the site right after updating and something looks wrong, try hard refreshing your browser. It could be that some of the styles and javascript are cached.

If you still have an issue, please drop a comment here or e-mail me. Let me know if you are using Portfolio Press or Portfolio+.

If you want to re-install a previous version of Portfolio Press, you can download a zip here. If you want to use a previous version of Portfolio+, check for recent e-mails from me about the update. You can also e-mail me.

Other (Less Noticeable) Changes

Post formats have been completely re-worked in this update. You can now display image and gallery post formats in the same way as post types. If you want to see how this works, check out the video in the Portfolio Press documentation.

A fallback image will be used in the portfolio view if a featured image is not set on a post, or the post is password protected.

The default width for the single column layout is now 980px.

The menus code and markup has been completely rewritten. This new code should be a bit more efficient, and the menus look should a bit nicer. If you’ve re-styled any of these elements using a child theme, you might to make a few edits to get it looking right again.

Icon fonts are being used instead of images wherever possible. You’ll also notice them in the post meta.

Template locations have changed. Again, if you’re using a child theme, this might affect you.

Portfolio+ users now have the option to hide dates. The options panel has also been re-organized. Additional options are also on the way for Portfolio+ users.

  1. Hi Devin,

Thanks for the update, looks great! I really like the sub-menu reformatting. One issue I am having with the update is the position of my menu. I had it set to “right of logo” and now the menu only shows “underneath logo”. No matter what I do, it won’t go back to “right of logo”. I even did “Restore defaults” for the theme.

I would like the menu to be offset to the right of the logo like it had been before the update. Here is the site I am working on: gallery.sou.edu.

Any help is greatly appreciated! =)

      1. Thanks Devin,

I resized my logo several times with no change in menu position. I then got rid of the logo entirely and still the menu is underneath the title, left aligned. I then made my menu shorter by deleting some menu items and still it refuses to go to the right of the logo and be right aligned.

I’m still not sure what the issue is. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks Devin for helping me figure it out!

Is it possible for you to enable the option of centering header elements (logo & menu)? Webpages look off when header elements aren’t centered and the rest of the content on the page is. I’m using a full portfolio page with no side bar. It would be great to have an option to center header contents.

  2. Hi, I love your theme and have been using it for a few years now.
I updated it but suddently the portfolio items or pages are blank now.
Have you had a case like this before?
    Thank you for your help!

  3. I have the same problem as Simon after updating.

Did he or you find a solution?

    Howdy,
I’m using Portfolio Press for my first ever website design, and it’s all going well, however I can’t seem to work out how to stop the images in the gallery of a post from going blurry. They look fine on the homepage, and when I click on them individually, so it’s only in the gallery view. I’ve tried all sorts of resolutions. Would appreciate any advice before I try a different theme. Thanks, Liz

Thanks so much for getting back to me: I ended up solving the issue by downloading the jetpack plug in and updating the gallery to a tiled gallery and clicking on ” Display all your gallery pictures in a cool mosaic.”!
